Best Luxury Travel Destinations in Latin America

When you think of Latin America, backpacking probably comes to mind. It’s far more affordable than Europe and offers endless adventures, both of which are a draw for backpackers from around the world.

But Central and South America are also excellent destinations for luxury travel. Here, we’re going to break down some of the best places to visit if you’re looking to treat yourself.

Costa Rica

The adventure capital of Central America is also a super choice for luxury seekers. Though travel within the country can be a little rough in some areas (there are plenty of potholes), once you reach your destination it’s smooth sailing. The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is peppered with luxurious accommodations. And while there are plenty of larger resorts like the Four Seasons, smaller boutique hotels tend to offer exceptional service and a cozier, more intimate feel. Check out Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula for beachside accommodations and Manuel Antonio rainforest for a jungle retreat.

Patagonia, Chile

Patagonia may not be the first place to come to mind when you think of luxury vacations, but if you haven’t considered it, you’re missing out. From hiking and exploring fjords to photography excursions and even kayaking, this beautiful region has plenty to offer in terms of scenery and outdoor activities — but it also has a number of luxury hotels that make it completely acceptable to relax and enjoy the sweeping views, too.

Mendoza, Argentina

Argentina has luxurious experiences all over the country, from bustling Buenos Aires to the mountains and tundra of Tierra del Fuego. But the country is well known for its wine, and in (and around) Mendoza you’ll find luxury retreats on private vineyards. Depending on the hotel, you’ll be able to experience exquisite food and wines, relaxing massages, activities like horseback riding, and, of course, wine tours and tastings — all tied together by impeccable service and luxurious rooms and suites.

Cartagena, Colombia

This coastal city combines the best of history and romance, welcoming visitors with gorgeous upscale hotels and streets lined with bright colonial buildings. Rooftop terraces, exclusive boutiques, art galleries, and luxurious spas dot the city, and private guides are available for hire to show you the little-known secrets of the city. Those looking to truly escape can charter a yacht for a private getaway to a nearby island.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

As one of the more expensive destinations in South America, the Galapagos Islands aren’t really on the backpacking circuit. There are plenty of beautiful accommodations on the islands, but if you want real luxury (and the chance to explore a number of different islands), a multi-day liveaboard cruise is your best bet. The cruises are small — typically less than 50 passengers — and often include local guides, delicious food and drinks, and even WiFi. Some cruises offer special departures, too. For example, with a well-known marine biologist, a wellness sailing, or a photographer-hosted sailing.

Machu Picchu, Peru

No Latin American travel list would be complete without Machu Picchu — and it’s just as appealing for luxury travelers as it is for those who opt to hike the Inca Trail. Cusco has several highly rated hotels that offer all the comforts of home (and then some), with beautiful views, exceptional food, and excellent service. When you’re ready to see the ruins, there’s nothing quite as luxurious as the Belmond Hiram Bingham. The train offers round-trip journeys or extended multi-day packages in its gorgeous carriages with plenty in the way of old-world charm.
