Fruit Juice Markets and Their Global Trade
Fruit juices are a major trade item worldwide, particularly those that come from exotic and tropical fruits such as orange, tomato, pineapple, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits. These goods can be traded in liquid, frozen, or concentrate form. Likewise, most of these fruits can be fermented in order to produce an alcoholic beverage. Nevertheless, this article will only analyze the trade of non-fermented nor spirited tropical fruit juices.
Fruit Juice Markets and Their Global Trade
Firstly, during 2016, the European Union dominated the global trade of tomato juice. Overall, the total exports of tomato juice in 2016 accounted for US$43 million, while global imports totaled US$65 million. Furthermore, that same year, the largest importer of tomato juice was the United Kingdom representing US$18 million or 28% of the global imports share. Simultaneously, Italy was the largest tomato juice exporter in 2016 with US$6.9 million or 16% of international sales.
Meanwhile, in the case of non-fermented nor spirited grapefruit juice, global exports totaled US$244 million and global imports totaled US$280 million in 2016. Moreover, that same year, the largest importer of grapefruit juice was Japan representing US$46.4 million or 17% of the global imports share. Similarly, the Netherlands was the largest grapefruit juice exporter in 2016 with US$56.2 million or 23% of international sales.
Simultaneously, during 2016, the global exports of non-fermented nor spirited pineapple juice totaled US$699 million, while imports represented US$782 million. Furthermore, that same year, the largest importer of pineapple juice was the Netherlands accounting for US$149 million or 19% of the global imports share. Meanwhile, Costa Rica was the largest exporter of grapefruit juice in 2016 with US$201 million or 29% of international sales.
Another internationally traded drink is non-fermented nor spirited apple juice, which accounted for US$1.8 billion in exports in 2016 as well as US$1.95 billion in imports. Specifically, the largest importer of apple juice during 2016 was the United States with US$497 million or 25% of the global imports share. Likewise, China was the largest exporter of apple juice that year totaling US$542 million or 30% of international sales.
In the case of non-fermented nor spirited orange juice, there are two trade categories: frozen or concentrate and regular liquid form. During 2016, the global trade of non-frozen orange juice represented US$3.5 billion in exports and US$4 billion in imports. Moreover, that same year, the largest importer of non-frozen orange juice was Belgium representing US$655 million or 16% of the global imports share. Similarly, Brazil was the largest exporter of non-frozen orange juice in 2016 with US$1 billion or 30% of international sales. On the other hand, in the case of frozen orange juice, global trade in 2016 accounted for US$1.7 billion in exports and US$1.3 billion in imports. Furthermore, that same year, the largest importer of frozen orange juice was the United States accounting for US$309 million or 24% of the global imports share. Meanwhile, Brazil was the largest exporter of frozen orange juice in 2016 with US$858 million or 51% of international sales.
